Path of Exile 2 Expedition Guide: How to Master the Endgame Mechanic

Aug 02, 2025, 11:47:02 PST | Categories : Path of Exile 2 |

Expeditions are a thrilling and rewarding endgame league mechanic in Path of Exile 2, designed to challenge players with tactical choices and risk-reward gameplay. In Expeditions, you place explosives to unearth monsters and treasure chests buried beneath the map's surface. The twist? Certain Remnants found during the expedition will modify monsters with buffs or debuffs, increasing both the difficulty and the quality of loot you can earn.

Expedition Basics

When exploring the Atlas, you might notice specific maps marked with Expedition icons. These maps contain Expedition encounters where the adventure begins.

Upon entering an Expedition map, you'll meet one of four NPCs - Rog, Dannig, Tujen, or Gwennen - who stand near a burial site dotted with Monster Markers, Remnants, and Chest Icons.

· Explosives: You start with 5 explosives to strategically place around the map to uncover monsters and chests.

· Accessing Explosives: Press the V key or click the explosives icon at the bottom of your screen.

· Remnants: These are special markers that buff monsters and their drops. Monsters unearthed by explosives detonated on or after a Remnant will be affected by its modifiers.

Planning Your Explosive Placement

The sequence of your explosive placement is vital. Unearthing powerful Remnants early will buff subsequent monsters, increasing your rewards, but also ramping up difficulty. Balancing this risk versus reward is key to a successful Expedition.

After placing your explosives (highlighted by a green ring showing what will be unearthed), activate the Detonator to set off the chain of explosions. Survive the monsters to claim the rewards from all revealed chests.

Remnant Modifiers: What to Watch Out For

Remnants come with both positive and negative effects that greatly influence your fight:

· Damage Immunities: Some Remnants grant monsters immunity to specific damage types (highlighted in bright yellow). Avoid these if your build depends on that damage type.

· Utility Disabling Effects: Certain Remnants can disable leech or evasion, severely hampering survivability.

· Runic Monsters Duplication: An excellent modifier that doubles the number of Runic Monsters - the source of rare Artifacts and valuable loot.

· Loot Bonuses: Many Remnants improve chest loot quality and increase artifact and item drops from monsters.

Always read the Remnant effects carefully before committing to them. Striking a balance between challenge and survivability is crucial.

Expedition Enemies and Factions

Expeditions feature monsters from various factions, each posing unique threats:

· Runic Casters: They unleash devastating area-of-effect spells and must be handled quickly.

· Long-Range Arbalists: Keep mobile to avoid their deadly ranged attacks.

· Generic Expedition monsters can also swarm you, so keep situational awareness at all times.

Expedition Rewards and Crafting

Artifacts found in Expeditions are highly valuable. They can be:

· Used for crafting with Expedition Vendors.

· Combined via the Recombinator for powerful item modifiers.

· Poe 2 trade to get Currency

Expedition crafting is complex and still evolving, but can be lucrative and rewarding.

· Exotic Coinage lets you reroll vendor inventories to find specific crafting bases.

Logbooks: Massive Expedition Maps

Occasionally, you may find Expedition Logbooks, large maps that allow placing 20+ explosives. These offer extensive chains of monsters, chests, Path of Exile 2 Currency, hidden underground areas, and even the Olroth Pinnacle Boss fight.

· Defeating Olroth at higher difficulties grants Expedition Atlas Passive Points, which boost difficulty and rewards further.

· Logbooks are excellent for farming large amounts of Artifacts and loot.

Expedition Atlas Passive Tree

By investing Expedition Atlas Passive Points, you can:

· Increase difficulty and rewards in Logbooks.

· Influence Expedition encounters on your maps.

Points are primarily gained by defeating Olroth at escalating difficulties.

Expedition Tablets: Boost Your Expeditions

Expedition Tablets can be socketed into Atlas Towers to enhance encounters at the cost of increased difficulty.

Prefixes

Boost general map loot:

· +10-15% Item Rarity

· +3-7% Item Quantity

· +3-7% Pack Size

· +15-25% Magic Monsters

· +10-15% Gold Found

· +5-10% Experience Gain

Specifically improve Expedition encounters:

Final Tips

· Always check Remnant effects before committing.

· Balance risk and reward: don't over-stack difficulty early.

· Stay mobile in combat to avoid dangerous monster abilities.

· Use Logbooks for efficient Artifact farming and passive progression.

· Optimize your Atlas with Tablets and Passive Points to maximize Expedition rewards.

Expeditions in Path of Exile 2 combine tactical planning, risk management, and rewarding gameplay, making them a cornerstone of the endgame experience. Master the explosives, respect the Remnants, and reap the valuable loot beneath the surface!
